"At the battle of Bloody Brook, John Toppan was wounded in the shoulder, concealed himself in a water course that at that time was almost dry, and hauled grass and weeds over his bead so that, though the Indians sometimes stepped over him he was not discovered."2 John Toppan died on 26 December 1723 at the age of 72.2
