Perley Dennison Smith jr., professor at Boston University School of Law and trial lawyer for Union Mutual Insurance Company, died August 11, 1951, at his summer home at Boothbay Harbor. Born October 30, 1902, in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of Perley D. '95 and Annie Sewall Smith and the grandson of Isaiah Perley Smith '58, and prepared at. Methuen High School. After graduation from Bowdoin he attended Boston University School of Law for three years, receiving an LL.B degree in 1927. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar that year and for a year was an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law. From 1928 until his death he was a lawyer in Boston and Marblehead, where he made his home. He is survived by his wife, Helen Perkins Smith; by two daughters, Susan S. and Pamela D; by a sister, Miss Eleanor Smith of Chicago, Ill; and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perley D. Smith of Boston. In 1946 he was convicted of conspiracy to pass information to the USSR and sentenced to five years inprisonment. After spending three years as physicist and director for Vector Labs Inc. in Montreal, and several years teaching physics and mathematics in that city, he came to Memorial as an assistant professor in 1962 and retired in 1977.3
