Dr. Grant Powell J.P. was born on 24 May 1779 in Norwich, England, though Burke's Colonial Gentry gives a date of 8 May 1779.2 He was the son of Chief Justice William Dummer Powell and Anne Murray.1 Dr. Grant Powell J.P. was baptised on 30 May 1779 at Norwich.3 He married Elizabeth Staats Bleecker, daughter of John Rutger Bleecker and Elizabeth Staats, on 1 May 1805.3 Dr. Grant Powell J.P. was appointed in 1813, surgeon having charge of all hospital arrangements on the Niagara frontier. He first settled in Montreal and then in Toronto. He was one of the original members of the Upper Canada Medical Board, retired from practice in 1817; appointed clerk of the House of Assembly and later as Clerk of the Legislative Council.4,2 He died on 10 June 1838 in Toronto at the age of 59 however the Toronto Patriot gives a date of 12 June 1838.2,3

His father took six months leave of absence to lobby in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, London and Madrid for his son's release. Jeremiah was set free in 1807.4
