Halbert Stevens Greenleaf1

     Halbert Stevens Greenleaf was born on 12 April 1827 in Guilford, Vermont.1 He was the son of Jeremiah Greenleaf and Elvira Eunice Stevens.1 He was brought up on a farm and engaged in various occupations till 1859 when he became a member of the firm of Linus Yale, Jr., & Co., lockmakers in Philadelphia. He removed to Shelburne Falls, Mass., in 1861, and organized the Yale & Greenleaf Lock Co., of which he became business manager. In 1862 he enlisted as a private in Company E, 52d Massachusetts volunteers, and was commissioned captain September 12, and colonel Oct. 15, 1862. He participated in the battle of Indian Ridge, at Jackson Cross Roads, and in the assault on Port Hudson. June 14, 1863. At the expiration of his military service he was given command of the steamer Col. Benedict on the lower Mississippi till the end of the war, when he took charge of the salt works in Petite Anse Isle, St. Mary's Parish, La. In June, 1867, he removed to Rochester, N.Y., and became a lock manufacturer. He was a Democratic representative from the thirtieth New York district in the 48th and 52d congresses, 1883-85 and 1891-93. Halbert Stevens Greenleaf died on 25 August 1906 in Greece, Charlotte, New York, at the age of 79 being his summer home and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New York.

     Jonathan Greenleaf was born on 4 September 1785 in Newburyport, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Moses Greenleaf and Lydia Parsons.1 Jonathan was reared on a farm at New Gloucester, Maine, attended the common schools, studied theology with the Rev. Francis Brown, D.D., of North Yarmouth, Maine, and was licensed to preach by the Cumberland association at Saco, Maine, in September, 1814. He was ordained at Wells, Maine, March 8, 1815, by the York County association as pastor of the First Congregational church. In 1828 he was dismissed and removed to Boston, Mass., as pastor of the Mariners' church. He was corresponding secretary of the American Seamen's Friend society, New York city, 1833-41, and after supplying for a few months the vacant Congregational church at Lyndon, Vt., he established in 1843 the Wallabout Presbyterian church in Brooklyn, N.Y., and remained its pastor till his death. He was married Nov. 2, 1814, to Sarah Johnson of New Gloucester, Maine. The honorary degree of M.A. was conferred upon him by Bowdoin in 1824 and that of S.T.D. by the College of New Jersey in 1863. He is the author of Sketches of the Ecclesiastical History of the State of Maine (1821); History of the Churches of New York (1846); Thoughts on Prayer (1847); A Sketch of Lyndon, Vt. (1852); Genealogy Of the Greenleaf Family (1854), and A Sketch of Wells, in Maine Historical Collections (1831). Jonathan Greenleaf married Sarah Johnson on 2 November 1814.1 Jonathan Greenleaf died on 24 April 1865 in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 79.1
