Mary A. "Mollie" Goodale1

F, #16192, b. 9 September 1860, d. 3 June 1922
Mary A. "Mollie" Goodale was born on 9 September 1860 in Watertown, New York.2 She was the daughter of Dr. Charles Goodale and Mary Sewall.1 Mary A. "Mollie" Goodale died on 3 June 1922 in Watertown, New York, at the age of 613 and is buried in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.4
Granddaughter of Henry Devereux Sewell, Who Built Original Plant of Bagley & Sewall Company
Miss Mary A. Goodale, a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal church and one of the best known residents of this city, passed away about 7:30 this morning at the City hospital following an illness extending over a period of years. Miss Goodale, who was best known as Miss Mollie A. Goodale, was 62 years of age. Death was due to complications, her heart having become weak during her last illness.
Miss Goodale had been a sufferer for a number of years. She had been a patient at the City hospital on several occasions during her long Illness and was last admitted to that institution on Nov. 20. 1921. For the past several weeks Miss Goodale's condition had been very serious and for at least a week it had been critical.
Miss Goodale was born in Watertown, Sept. 9. 1860, the daughter of Dr. Charles A. Goodale and Mary Sewall Goodale. Her maternal grandparents were among the early settlers of this city, and her grandfather, Henry Devereux Sewall, erected the original structure of the Bagley and Sewall's Machine Works, now the largest in the city.
Henry Sewall was the second son of Samuel and Abigail Sewall. In 1607, he went from this city to Portland, where he was employed in a branch establishment of one of the business houses of Boston. Then he moved the business to Montreal, Canada, and in 1813, owing to the war with England, was required either to take the oath of allegiance or to leave Canada. He chose the latter alternative and abandoned his business. Being obliged to return to Montreal during the year, he was arrested as a spy, but succeeded in proving his innocence. In 1814 he travelled for a time in western New York, and was afterward engaged for some years in foreign shipping and commission business in New York City. In 1828, he began to build a home for himself on Sewall's Island, this city, and in May, 1829, he and his family moved to Watertown, taking possession of their new home on Oct. 17. Mr. Sewall did much to advance the prosperity of Watertown by his interest in manufacture, and erected the original structure of Bagley and Sewall company. When the first Trinity church was built in Court street the greater part of the expense was borne by Mr. Sewall; he and his family being members of the congregation.
Mr. and Mrs. Sewall were the parents of nine children, one of them, Mrs. Mary Sewall Goodale, mother, of Miss Mollie Goodale, Dr. Charles A. Goodale, father of Miss Goodale, died when the latter was very young. Dr. Goodale was a member of a very old family in this city, and he himself was very well known and well liked. Miss Goodale's mother was born in the house erected on Sewall's Island by her father. She died about 20 years ago.
Miss Mollie Goodale had always made her home in Watertown. She resided for many years at 240 Trinity Place, just opposite the Trinity Episcopal church parish house. She continued to reside there up until the time she was last taken ill, about seven months ago. She was admitted to the hospital at that time and since she had been there, she had disposed of all of her household goods, herself realizing     that she would not be able again to take up her duties at her home.
Miss Goodale was a life long member of Trinity Episcopal church and one of the most active members of that institution. She was a regular attendant at church services and always took an active part in the work of the various branches of the church. She was a generous contributor to the upkeep of the church and always active in raising funds during various campaigns.
For many years Miss Goodale had been interested in the young girls of Trinity church. She was active in organizing the Girls Friendly society of the church and had taken a part in the organization of a number of other girls' classes and societies. Miss Goodale had hundreds of friends in the city. She was very well liked, partly because of her happy disposition and jolly nature. She was always pleasant and throughout her long illness, she never became despondent. Although she was a great sufferer, she never complained either to friends or to those who cared for her. Miss Goodale was the last surviving member of her family. Three brothers, Henry Goodale, E. Goodale and H.D. Goodale, have died and she had no sisters. The nearest surviving relatives are a sister-in-law, Mrs. E.S. Goodale. and nieces, Mrs. Frank L. Massey and Mrs. Leonard D. Worden, Mrs. H.C. Whitney, Mrs. C.W. Valentine, Miss Pauline Goodale, Mrs. Waiter Camp and Mrs. E.W. Ellsworth, all of this city, are first cousins of Miss Goodale.
The remains were removed from the hospital to the Wilcox and Van Ness undertaking parlors. They will be taken from there to the Trinity Episcopal church. Funeral services will be held from that church at 4 Monday afternoon. Rev. Francis Eason, rector, officiating. Burial will be made at Brookside cemetery.3
