Thomas Denny died Tuesday evening at the age of seventy, at his residence in New York, after a short but painful illness.
He was born in Leicester was educated for the law, and in early life practised at the Boston bar. About 1834 he went to New York and engaged in mercantile business, his firm having been Porter, Denny & Co. In 1846 he engaged in the note brokerage business, having formed the firm of A. Fisher & Thomas Denny.
In 1862 he became a member of the New York Stock Exchange, and in 1868 formed the present firm of Thomas Denny & Co. Eminently successful in business, he devoted much time to charitable works; was one of the founders of the society for improving the condition of the poor, was also connected with the New York juvenile asylum, and was trustee of the society for the relief of ruptured and crippled children, He took a lively interest in educational affairs, was school trustee in the fifteenth ward, and was an active promoter of the college of the city of New York, and of the free school for girls in Twelfth Street. His business connections as director in corporations were numerous, and he was one of the founders of the American Exchange Bank of New York. He was a man of irreproachable character, and in the quieter walks of life of great influence and usefulness.6
