     Judge Peter Coffin was born in 1630 in Devon.1 He was the son of Judge Tristram Coffin and Dionis Stevens.1 Coffin removed to Dover, N. H., about 1650, and there became a successful merchant. He was deputy to the general court in Boston in 1672, 1673 and 1679. In 1689, when Dover was destroyed by the Indians, he and his family were captured but escaped and the next year moved to Exeter. He was chief justice of the superior court, 1697-98, and associate justice, 1695-1712.1 Judge Peter Coffin married Abigail Starbuck, daughter of Edward Starbuck.1 Judge Peter Coffin died on 21 March 1715 in Exeter, New Hampshire.1
