     Mary Sewall was born on 23 October 1799 in Augusta, Maine.1,2 She was the daughter of General Henry Sewall and Tabitha Sewall.1 Mary Sewall was baptised on 3 November 1799 at Hallowell.1 She died on 15 March 1825 in Augusta at the age of 25.1,2 Mary suffered from a purported mental illness, her "derangement " took the form of running away to join the Shakers at New Gloucester, Maine. Her father and the attending physician, Issachar Snell, responded by confining her in a special chair and later in a bunk "with a lid to shut down", reducing her food, and drawing blood to alleviate her nervous excitement. She died six months later, after expressing her love to all her family and begging their forgiveness.1

Death of an Old Army Nurse.

BOSTON, Mass., August 27. - Miss Mary A. Sewall, daughter of the late Rev. Chas. C. Sewall, died at her residence in Medfield, Mass., on Friday night of heart failure. Miss Sewall, like many patriotic women during the war, entered the service as army nurse in March, 1863, and was stationed at Point Lookout hospital, Maryland, until it became a confederate camp, when she was sent to Chester hospital, Pennsylvania, remaining in the service until March, 1865. For many years Miss Sewall kept a fancy goods store in the town building in Medfield, thus affording herself means of support.5
