William Dunning Sewall was born on 14 April 1861 in Bath, Maine.2 He was the son of Hon. Arthur Sewall and Emma Duncan Crooker.1 William Dunning Sewall is also recorded as Willis D. Sewall in the 1870 census of Bath, Maine.3 He married Mary Loke Sumner, daughter of George Sumner and Sarah Richardson, on 9 June 1886 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.4 William Dunning Sewall died on 25 April 1930 in Boston Post Road, Kittery, Maine, at the age of 69, in an automobile accident. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Caroline Liscomb was injured.5 He was a member of the firm Arthur Sewall & Co., Shipbuilders Bath, Maine. After graduating from the Worcester, Massachusetts Polytechnical Institute in 1882 he went on to study at John Hopkins University. He then entered a mercantile office in San Francisco remaining there for three years. He then returned to Bath to become a member of the Sewall shipbuilding company. He became president of the Bath Savings Institution; director of the Fidelity Trust Company of Portland; director of the Sandy River and Rangely Lakes railroad.4

He was educated at Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the United States military from September 1942 to February 1946. He was awarded two medals and several military citations.
He and his wife, the former Phebe Buckman, moved to Seattle in 1951, and to Bainbridge Island in 1956. He worked as an accountant for Boeing and as a stock broker for Dominick & Dominick before owning and operating Western Tours, Inc. While in Bainbridge, he co-founded the Port Madison Yacht Club. He was a lifelong Rotarian. He retired in 1979 and returned to his family home, Stonehouse Farm, in Maine. He devoted the remainder of his life to a variety of civic and philanthropic concerns. His first project after returning to Bath was to help with fund-raising for the restoration of the steeple of the Winter Street Church. He helped open the new Maine Maritime Museum; presided over and fund-raising for the Coastal Humane Society; was actively involved in the Bath Rotary; and delivered Meals on Wheels to senior citizens. He also co-founded the Sewall Family Fund for the purpose of restoring and preserving Bath's maritime history and artifacts. His favorite charities included the Coastal Humane Society, the Bath YMCA, the Maine Maritime Museum, the Patten Free Library and the city of Bath ambulance service.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993, and sister Mary Hyde, who died in 1990. He is survived by four daughters: Abbie Sewall of Yarmouth, Maine; Laura Sewall of Phippsburg, Maine; Gretchen Sewall and her husband Harry Laban of Edmonds, Washington; and Lee Sewall and her husband Mike McAleney of Cumberland, Maine; six grandchildren, Emma and Thatcher Sewall Shultz of Yarmouth, Maine; Emmett and Asher Laban of Edmonds, Wash; Deehan and Elizabeth McAleney of Cumberland, Maine; and three nieces and nephews. William Dunning Sewall was born on 2 May 1827.1 He was the son of William Dunning Sewall and Rachel Allen Trufant.1 William Dunning Sewall married Lydia Mary Fitts on 9 April 1851 in Bath, Sagadahoc, Maine.2 William Dunning Sewall died on 9 September 1851 in Bath, Maine, at the age of 24 "On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. William D. Sewall, Jr., of the firm Clark, Sewall & Co., of this city, while walking on the box stage of a new ship suddenly lost his balance and fell a distance of about 18 feet. On reaching the ground he received so severe a contusion in his head as to terminate fatally in a few hours". Bath Tribune3 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bath, Maine,, where his gravestone gives his date of death as 24 September 1851.4

William Gilman Sewall was born on 11 March 1874 at 26 Brimmer, Boston, Massachusetts.3 He was the son of William Bull Sewall and Lena I. Ingalls.1 William Gilman Sewall married Angela de Acosta, daughter of Ricardo de Acosta, on 15 November 1910 in 1037 Madison Avenue, New York.4 In 1919 he was in British East Africa at the time of his brother's death.2 William Gilman Sewall and Angela de Acosta were divorced in October 1922 at Paris, France.5 William Gilman Sewall died on 14 July 1941 in the Post Graduate Hospital, New York City, at the age of 67 of a cerebral haemorrhage. The announcement in The Times describes him as being of Boston, Massachusetts and Njoro, Kenya. The New York Times gives a fuller picture and describes him as a big game hunter who owned 40,000 acres of rubber and wheat plantations in Kenya. Several of his game trophies adorn the Harvard Club in New York. In the first world war he served as a captain in the British Army and was on the staff of General Smith-Dorrien in the expedition to Kenya.6,7
