Joseph Ellis Sewall graduated in 1876 from Bowdoin College.1 He appears on the census of 1880 at Bath, Maine, in which he is described as a Master Mariner.3 He married Sarah Lambert Lincoln on 21 June 1882 in Bath, Sagadahoc, Maine.4 He was the first captain of the Edward Sewall, a four-masted steel barque built in 1899 by Arthur Sewall & Co., Bath, ME, at a cost of $145,000. He was also the first captain of the William P. Frye launched in 1901, he also owned a 2/128 part of the ship.5 Capt. Joseph Ellis Sewall and Sarah Lambert Lincoln appear on the census of 1910 at Bath, Maine; listed as a boarder with them is a Celia E. Lincoln, born ca. 1854 in Maine.6 Capt. Joseph Ellis Sewall died in 1925.

Knowlton and Estella Dickenson, on 21 November 1908 in Spokane, Washington, at the time of the wedding he was a clerk and she was a nurse.4 Joseph Sewall Sewall and Agnes May Knowlton appear on the census of 1930 at Glendive, Dawson, Montana, Estella Knowlton, mother-in-law, a widow aged 72 was living with them.5 Joseph Sewall Sewall married secondly Edith Orleman in 1956.1 He was employed as District Storekeeper for the Northern Pacific Railway Company in St. Paul. In retirement he lived in Daytona Beach, Florida.2 Joseph Sewall Sewall died on 10 July 1961 in the NPBA Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota, at the age of 76.2,6 The funeral service was conducted by his son Father Thomas Sewall on 13 July 1961 and Joseph Sewall Sewall was subsequently buried in Evergreen cemetery.2

Joseph Thompson Sewall Jr. was born on 6 December 1929 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.2 He was the son of Joseph Thompson Sewall and Gara E. Dunton. Joseph Thompson Sewall Jr. was educated at Admiral Billard Academy, New London.1 He died on 19 July 1999 in Augusta, Maine, at the age of 69.

He was born here, a son of Joseph T. and Gara Dunton Sewall, attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay Region High School in 1948. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Later, he was a yacht captain in Florida until he returned to live in Boothbay Harbor. He worked in local shipyards until accepting a position in the maintenance department of the Maine Department of Marine Resources. He retired in 1990.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Marilynn Berry Sewall of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Kenneth of Schroon Lake, N.Y., and James of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Janice Sewall of Boothbay Harbor; and five grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay, where a funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Dan McNutt and Al Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay."

Joseph Wheelwright Sewall was born on 19 March 1946.1 He died on 20 December 1974 in Telluride, Colorado, at the age of 28 Joseph Sewall Jr., 28, of Old Town, Maine, son of Maine Senate President Joseph Sewall, died Friday after becoming ill at his job as a cook. A spokesman for the town marshal's office said there was no suspicion of foul play, but an autopsy was ordered for Saturday. The spokesman said Sewall was taken to the home of a friend where he appeared to recover. His body was found about 4 a.m. Officials would not speculate as to the cause of death. Greeley Daily Tribune, 21 December 1974.2,3 He was buried on 26 December 1974 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Maine,, lot 235ED.2

Rev. Jotham Sewall was born on 6 December 1791 in Chesterville, Franklin County, Maine.3,4 He was the son of Rev. Jotham Sewall and Jenney Sewall.2 Rev. Jotham Sewall married Rachel Crosby Bradbury, daughter of John Bradbury and Priscilla Burbank, on 24 January 1815 in Chesterville.3 Rev. Jotham Sewall was ordained on 3 November 1824 in the Congregational Church and Society, Newcastle, where he served for over 15 years. The consecrating prayer was given by his father.3 He married secondly Anna Baker on 20 November 1838.5 On 9 October 1840 he was installed as Minister by his father at Westbrook.6 On 24 August 1843 at Bluehill, again being installed by his father.7 On 16 February 1853 he was installed over the Congregational Church in Orfordville, New Hampshire.8 Rev. Jotham Sewall married thirdly Martha A. Bourbon on 13 September 1860.5 Rev. Jotham Sewall died on 18 December 1884 in Bangor, Maine, at the age of 93 (whilst Maine Families reports his death as taking place in Williamstown, Massachusetts; various newspapers state that it happened at his son's (Professor John Sewall) residence).3,9
