     Dorothy Marshall was born on 26 March 1900.¹ She was the daughter of Dr. John Willis Marshall and Eva Edge.^1,2 Dorothy's death was registered in the quarter ending March 1994 in the Carlisle, Cumberland registration district.¹ Dorothy Marshall was born in Lancashire and educated at the Park School, Preston. She read History at Girton 1918-22, spending her fourth year as a J F Cairnes Research Scholar in Economic History. At Girton she was taught by Eileen Power whose inspiration and methods were an influence throughout her own academic life. After Tripos she started research for her PhD, first at Girton then at the London School of Economics. She received her doctorate in 1926 and her thesis was published the same year as 'The English Poor in the Eighteenth Century'. This book made a permanent contribution to English social history and helped to launch her academic career at a time when jobs were scarce.

She taught history for a short time in Reigate and held temporary lectureships at Vassar in the US and Witwatersrand, Johannesburg before taking up mainstream academic posts first at Bedford College, London (1930-34) then at Durham (1934-36) and finally at the University College of South Wales, Cardiff (1936-67). One of her first pupils was Roy Jenkins who attributed his university place at Oxford to her teaching.

Dorothy Marshall's major publications appeared between 1965 and 1968 when a series of books on the eighteenth century made her one of the key interpreters of that period. She was elected an honorary fellow of her college in Cardiff in 1981 and was awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Lancaster in 1984.      Sophia N. Marshall was born on 24 June 1862 in York, Maine.^1,2 She married Joseph Perley Putnam, son of George William Sewall Putnam and Tryphena J. Remick, on 24 July 1885.² Sophia N. Marshall died on 9 February 1920 at the age of 57.²

     William Edge Marshall's birth was registered in the quarter ending June 1905 in the Lancaster registration district.¹ He was the son of Dr. John Willis Marshall and Eva Edge. William Edge Marshall married Winifred Edith Sewell, daughter of Algernon Percy Sewell and Caroline Winifred Horne, on 21 September 1935 in Great Chart, Kent.² William Edge Marshall died on 11 May 1944 at the age of 38 He was a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 424 Sqdn. It was said that his aircraft failed to return from a raid over Norway.³

She was born circa September 1833 in Nova Scotia though her age at marriage is give as 29, thus indicating a birthdate a year or two earlier.^2,1 She was the daughter of Peter Martin and Jane (Unknown).¹ Elizabeth Martin married Otis Henry Sewall, son of Gen. Henry Sewall and Mary Witherell, on 31 January 1860 in Wrentham, Massachusetts, her age at marriage is given as 29.¹ Elizabeth Martin appears on the census of 27 July 1860 at Boston, Massachusetts.³ She died on 4 March 1865 in Chesterville ?, Franklin County, Maine.⁴ She was buried in North Chesterville Cemetery, Farmington, Maine.⁴

Martin married Martha Marrett Sewall, daughter of Rev. Samuel Sewall and Martha Margaret Marrett, on 26 November 1861 in Burlington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, The Rev. Samuel Sewall conducted the service. In the record of the marriage both parties are described as teachers.²
