Lt. Arthur Gordon Slane Fleming DCM was born on 12 April 1870 in Dublin, Ireland, His attestation paper for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force gives his birth date as 12th April 1875, which would appear to be a lie in order to appear young enough to serve.1,4 He was the son of Capt. Joseph Fleming and Sophie Janet Sewell.2,3 Brought up in Quebec, educated at Bishops College, Lennoxville; at an early age went to the States, became an engineer in Montana. When war broke out took the first train to Winnipeg, enlisted, machine gun section, exchanged into the Princess Pats, Mentioned in Despatches, got his commission in the 26th Battalion, 5th Brigade, wounded on the Somme, fought through Vimy Ridge.3 Lt. Arthur Gordon Slane Fleming DCM died on 15 August 1917 in Lens, France, at the age of 47.1 He was buried in I.K. 14, Aix-Noulette Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France.1

He served with the 30th Regiment in the Crimea from May 30, 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (medal with clasp and Turkish medal). He later transferred to the 56th Regiment.4
