Richard Dummer was born circa 1598 in Bishopstoke, Hampshire, owing to the loss of the early Bishopstoke parish-register, this cannot be verified. In the list of passengers by the "Bevis," his age is given as 40 in 1638. The only record I find of him in England is that in 1631, previous to his first going to New England, he settled a rent-charge of 40 shillings per annum, out of his lands in Bishopstoke, to the use of the poor of that parish forever. It was a generous thing to do as he was taking leave of his old neighbors, and speaks well for his character. That he paid a subsequent visit to England is proved by the fact that in 1650-1 he proved, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the will of Thomas Nelson, husband of his niece Joane.1,3,4 He was the son of Thomas Pyldrym (alias) Dummer and Joane (Unknown).1,2 Richard Dummer married firstly Jane Mason, daughter of Rev. Thomas Mason and Helena (Unknown), before 1632.3 Richard Dummer and Jane Mason emigrated on 26 May 1632 to New England on the Whale and settled in Roxbury.3 In 1633 at Roxbury he built a watermill.5 Richard Dummer married secondly Frances (Unknown) (widow Burr) circa 1643.6 Richard Dummer made a will on 23 April 1679 and proved 1 April 1680.5 He died on 14 December 1679 (1678 according to Sewell p. 1094).1,7
