Henry Sewall was born in 1576 in Coventry.1 He was baptised on 8 April 1576 at St. Michael's Church, Coventry, Warwickshire.2,3,4,5 He was the son of Henry Sewall and Margaret Grazebrook. Henry Sewall married firstly Mary Cawarden, daughter of Thomas Cawarden of Mavesyn Ridware and Ann (Unknown), on 21 October 1601 at St. Nicholas, Mavesyn Ridware, Staffordshire.6 Henry Sewall married secondly Anne Hunt at Manchester ?.7,8 Henry Sewall married thirdly Ellen Mosley, daughter of Anthony Mosley and Alice Webster, after 16 December 1615 being the date that the Bishop of Chester granted a licence for them to be married at Ashton-on-Mersey, Cheshire or Didsbury, Lancashire.
(There is a discrepancy here, the notes in the Diary state that Henry was only married twice 1, Anne Hunt and 2, Ellen Nugent, the McClellan family tree clearly shows the earlier marriage, which is also noted by Duff p.13).3,7
In 1623 Henry Sewall was living in Manchester, England.9 He emigrated in 1635 to Massachusetts; "together with his wife Anne." (Actually Ellen, Anne being dead).10 On 5 June 1638 Henry Sewall and Ellen Mosley were living in Ipswich, Massachusetts, when her husband Henry was presented to the grand jury for beating her. This appears to be another example of the temper that his mother refered to in her will.3 In 1646 Henry Sewall was recorded as living in Rowley.3 He died in March 1656/57 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, at the age of 80 'died there the "first month 1656."3 '

He emigrated in 1634 "Sent by his father to New England 1634, with Net Cattel and Provisions sutable for a new Plantation, sailing on the Elizabeth and Dorcas. Mr Cotton would have had him settle in Boston; but in regard of his Cattel he chose to goe to Newbury, where his father soon followed him."3,4 He married Jane Dummer, daughter of Stephen Dummer and Alice Archer, on 25 March 1646 at Newbury, Essex County; the service being conducted by Richard Saltonstall.3,5 In 1647 he returned with his family, to England and three years later in 1650, he was presented to the living of North Baddesley in Hampshire.6 In 1658 or early 1659, and leaving his wife and children at Baddesley, Henry again sailed for Massachusetts carrying a letter from Richard Cromwell concerning the inheritance of his father's estate. Soon after his arrival he learned of Richard Cromwell's abdication, the restoration of the monarchy and the inevitable collapse of Puritan predominance. He summoned his family to New England.7 Rev. Henry Sewall died on 16 May 1700 in Newbury (Titcomb gives 16 March 1700).8,9 He was buried in the burying ground of the First Parish Church, Newbury, Massachusetts.10

Judge Sewall
In 1692 the first of Samuel Sewall's many appointments was that of special commissioner to the Court of Oyer and Terminer presiding over the Salem witchcraft trials. He and the other members of this commission were responsible for convicting and sentencing nineteen people to death. The Court, due to its hysterical tenor, inevitably lost its public support and was dismissed. The Superior Court of Judicature was established soon after the close of the Court of Oyer and Terminer and consisted of several of the judges from that court, including Sewall. He was the only commissioner to admit his error publicly.10 In 1697 in church before the congregation he publicly confessed his error in concurring with the death sentences imposed at the Salem Witch Trials. Between 1718 and 1728 he was Chief Justice of the superior court.
Chief Justice Samuel E. Sewall married secondly Abigail Melyen, daughter of Jacob Melyen and Hannah Hubbard, on 29 October 1719 at Boston, Massachusetts, at which ceremony his son Joseph officiated.11 Chief Justice Samuel E. Sewall married thirdly Mary Shrimpton, daughter of Jonathan Shrimpton and Mary Oliver, on 29 March 1722 at Boston, Massachusetts, the service being conducted by his son-in-law, the Rev. William Cooper who is described as a Presbyterian. (A transcription of the Boston Marriages gives a date of 10 March 1722).12,9,11 Chief Justice Samuel E. Sewall died on 1 January 1729/30 in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 77 after an illness lasting about a month.5,13 He was buried in the burying ground of the First Parish Church, Newbury, Massachusetts, the resting place is marked by an old stone, erected by their eldest son, Samuel Sewell, which bears the following inscription: HENRY SEWELL SENT BY HENRY SEWELL HIS FATHER / IN THE SHIP ELIZABETH AND DORCAS, CAPT. Major Stephen Sewall was born on 19 August 1657 in Baddesley, near Romsey, Hampshire.1 He was the son of Rev. Henry Sewall and Jane Dummer. Major Stephen Sewall was baptised on 24 September 1657 by Henry Cox, a dissenting minister, in his father's house.2 He emigrated in 1661 "came to New England in the ship Prudent Mary, Capt. Woodgreek, Commander."2 He married Margaret Mitchell, daughter of Rev. Jonathan Mitchell and Margaret Boradaile, on 13 June 1682 in Salem, Massachusetts.3,4 Major Stephen Sewall died on 17 October 1725 in Salem, Massachusetts, at the age of 68 (Berkin states that when he died he left nine ADULT children. Torrey gives a date of 1729 for his death).2 There is an entry in the Journals of the General Court for 1738 showing that, after his death, five hundred acres of public land near Salem were voted to his children in recognition of their father's services "while in command of the fort on Winter Island, during the Queen's War."5
